Equipment

Tools & Notions:

  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
  • Pins or fabric clips
  • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter + mat
  • Ruler or seam gauge
  • Iron & ironing board (pressing is key!)
  • Tailor’s chalk, fabric pen, or heat-erasable marker

Optional but helpful:

  • Quilter’s spray adhesive (for basting layers together)
  • Walking foot (great for quilting through layers)
  • Point turner, chopstick, or skewer (for scallops and corners)
  • Seam ripper (we all need one!)

Fabric Recomendations

Recommended Fabrics:

This pattern works best with woven, non-stretch fabrics that press well and hold quilting lines nicely.

  • Quilting cotton
  • Cotton poplin
  • Linen or linen blends
  • Cotton lawn
  • Light–medium weight canvas

For the lining, use similar weights to keep the skirt balanced.

Fabrics to Avoid:

  • Stretch fabrics (jersey, rib knit)
  • Very thick upholstery fabrics

These can make quilting tricky.

Choosing your Batting/Wadding:

100–120 gsm → Soft, lightly quilted look.

  • Perfect if you want the tree skirt to drape nicely. It gives gentle structure without too much bulk.

130–150 gsm → More defined quilting texture and slightly puffier finish.

  • Ideal if you want the tree skirt to feel a bit more substantial.

If using polyester batting, go for the lower end (around 100 gsm), since it tends to be loftier than cotton at the same weight.
